What Bernardo Bertolucci taught us about cinematography

Filmmaker Bernardo Bertolucci passed away today at the age of 77.
Bertolucci was a master Italian filmmaker who directed Last Tango in Paris, The Conformist, and the 9 time Academy Award winning The Last Emperor.
He was well known for his visual style, which was inspired by his background in art. What was happening in the cinematography was not only very expressionistic and sometimes painterly, it often reflected bits and pieces of the psychology of the characters in the scene.
Taste of Cinema did a good breakdown of his style in The Conformist, which you can read here: www.tasteofcinema.com/2012/the-conformist-a-visual-master-class/ ( el2.convertkit-mail2.com/c/68uv99lmn8a8hdenpz/6qhehoux3oxzm/aHR0cDovL3d3dy50YXN0ZW9mY2luZW1hLmNvbS8yMDEyL3RoZS1jb25mb3JtaXN0LWEtdmlzdWFsLW1hc3Rlci1jbGFzcy8= )
You might not be so much into Italian Expressionism in your film choices, and that’s OK.
But it’s important to recognize and honor Bertolucci for what he taught us–how to draw inspiration from art and how to use those visual choices to show us more about the psyches of the characters.
Bertolucci is definitely someone to watch if you’re looking for more of an advanced level of lighting, cinematography, and directing.
If you’re looking for something a little more basic, then you may want to check out this Saturday’s workshop.
We will NOT be covering things like Expressionism or how to use lighting to show what your character is thinking.
We WILL be covering the basics–how to properly expose a shot, how to know what camera lens and focal length you should use, and how to work your DSLR.
You’ve got to master the basics before you can work on the advanced stuff.
So if you’re looking to shore up your basic principles of cinematography, I can’t think of a better (or cheaper) way than this workshop.
